The Avenues Crofton Park is undergoing a community “refresh” that includes interior and exterior paint; replacing floor coverings; new artwork and furniture throughout the common areas; and upgrades to certain energy-efficient appliances and lighting in the resident apartments and cottages. The renovation builds upon the community’s original design concept, while introducing new elements that modernize and maintain the Class A environment of this award-winning 55+ active adult community in Broomfield, Colorado.
As with any change in living environments, the colors of the senior living community – both inside and out – are incredibly important. Experts will say they do more than decorate; they directly impact residents’ moods, physical safety and cognitive well-being.
Luyda Grigorieva, a color consultant with Godden | Sudik architects in Centennial, Colorado, collaborated with The Avenues Crofton Park team to develop a bold color palette for the community’s exterior apartments and cottages.
She worked closely with Ingrid Fraley, president of Maryland-based Design Services, who served as both a mentor and key collaborator throughout the project. Ingrid, whose firm developed the community’s distinctive style that launched in 2014, played an instrumental role in guiding Luyda and shaping the latest transformation. The two designers worked with The Avenues Crofton Park management team, which had expressed a desire to challenge conventional color norms in senior living.
“We want our residents and visitors to experience our community as a place of vibrancy and life, and that impression begins when they first see it from the outside,” said Len McBroom, the developer and manager of The Avenues Crofton Park, which has been named a local favorite by readers of the Broomfield Enterprise three of the last four years.
“I was up for this interesting challenge,” said Luyda. “I appreciate that Len wants something different than other communities and gave me the opportunity to work with bolder colors.”
Luyda ensured that the exterior paint palette worked in harmony with Ingrid’s interior design vision, creating a cohesive aesthetic throughout the property. “In many ways, the colors and forms that surround us are often unnoticeable, but they are constant,” she said. “If we know the basic psychology of colors, we can improve our mood and support our energy, evoke our emotions. That was the target idea—to create a place where people can feel more energetic, welcome and have an uplifting mood.”
The colors being used on The Avenues Crofton Park exterior differ from most senior living properties in Colorado. “We have learned that people react positively to bolder colors,” Luyda said. “We are starting to see it in multifamily developments, but not that much in senior living, which often has an institutional and muted approach to color. In a monochromatic sea of buildings, it is nice to have colorful ‘islands.’ For most of us, colors are natural mood enhancers that add interest and warmth to our days.”
The refreshed colors and environmental upgrades at The Avenues Crofton Park were prompted by the community’s local ownership and management team and brought to life through the collaborative efforts of Ingrid and Luyda. Together, they sought to ensure the community stays ahead of conventional industry trends. The upgrades celebrate so much of what the senior boutique living community focuses on offering residents, with a rare all-inclusive pricing approach.
“We sought with our color selections – and the associated vibrancy of them – to help The Avenues residents appreciate life’s simpler pleasures: enjoying nature, reading a good book, sharing meaningful conversations with friends over morning coffee, and finding beauty in everyday moments. The color palettes we created for the cottages and main building should bring cheerfulness and positive feelings in their everyday lives,” Luyda said.
Both Ingrid and Luyda have high hopes that the refresh will achieve these goals. “Once the refresh is completed, I want to ask people who live or visit The Avenues to analyze their feelings before and after they see the community. Do they feel more energy? Now, please use that energy for something good.”
