Fun Activities for Seniors Near Broomfield During American Heart Month

Every February, the American Heart Association ramps up its efforts to support Americans in maintaining a healthy heart through promoting American Heart Month. This timing aligns perfectly with Valentine’s Day, a celebration of the heart. The AHA shares several ways to keep healthy, including eating well, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, being socially connected, reducing stress, maintaining a positive mental outlook, and more.

The Avenues Crofton Park in Broomfield, Colorado offers seniors 55+ a place where they can embrace many of these heart-healthy recommendations. Residents living here love to socialize and play games in the common areas; enjoy spacious apartments where they can entertain and cook meals that suit their dietary needs; and participate in ongoing fitness and wellness programs.

While many of the residents – and seniors in general – may prefer to stay indoors during winter months, the community encourages fun, heart-healthy outings to break up the day and boost physical and mental well-being. And in line with the AHA’s suggestion, getting out for a walk or change of scenery can be healthy for both mind and body. Here are some ideas for keeping busy in a fun way this February during American Heart Month.

  1. A day trip to Denver and the world-class Denver Museum of Nature & Science or even the Denver Zoo, both near City Park, on a sunny day.
  2. A mid-week trip to the Denver Art Museum when it’s quieter. Get your “steps” in while taking in some fascinating exhibits.
  3. Explore exotic plant displays at the Denver Botanic Gardens and stay warm indoors when it’s chilly outside.
  4. Take a walk around Pelican Pond Trail in Thornton, which offers an ADA-accessible 1.3-mile loop, or walk right across the street from the community at Metzger Farm Open Space. Both trails offer great bird-watching opportunities, even during the winter.
  5. Consider a visit or several a week to the local recreation center, as many offer great discounts for seniors, along with senior-focused programs and activities. Many of The Avenues’ residents love to visit Broomfield’s Paul Derda Recreation Center to enjoy water aerobics classes, river walking, lap swimming, an adults-only hot tub and more.
  6. For those who like history, in east Denver, seniors can take a walk within the Wings Over the Rockies Museum, which has more than 182,000 square feet dedicated to iconic aircraft, space vehicles, and military artifacts.
  7. Another popular activity during the winter for seniors is a visit to the Butterfly Pavilion just outside Broomfield. Visitors can enjoy more than 1,000 butterflies along wheelchair-accessible, wide indoor paths, and visitors can be warm and cozy inside the pavilion while outside might be snowy and cold.

Fitness is an important part of maintaining a healthy heart, but it can also be enjoyable. Sometimes, an outing to an entertaining, educational, or tranquil path can do the job, and the Broomfield, Denver, and Boulder areas offer many opportunities for active older adults to stay healthy during Colorado’s winter months.
